Egoli Squash received funding from the Britford Bridge Trust grant, won by the PSA Foundation, allowing the program to build upon the academic support it provides for its’ young players.
Many ‘Squash for Development Organisations’ (SDOs) support their programme children by combining sport with academic support, food provisions and more.
Our research has suggested that by including the fun and social environment that squash offers, this creates a more welcoming platform for children to engage with these other areas to develop and improve themselves.
Based in Johannesburg South Africa, Egoli Squash provides squash training and academic support to the disadvantaged children living in poverty across central Gauteng.
Many of the children who participate in their program face growing up as orphans and with the responsibility of caring for siblings. Egoli provides an environment where they can grow and develop outside of their difficult living conditions.
The grant funding will be used specifically to provide new study resources and academic tutors to further their educational support. This includes setting up a new library, which shelves and books have already been purchased for.
See pictures from the tutor sessions already in swing for their Gazankulu and Soweto players.
The program will predominantly target Maths and English support, with the aim of securing bursaries and entrances into further educational institutions.
At the PSA Foundation, we are committed to supporting squash as a force for good. In partnership with our SDOs, and with your support, we can continue to aid social development in underprivileged areas.
