Still Bay Squash Centre is a flourishing community programme based in The Western Cape, South Africa.
Every Tuesday and Saturday during term time, the thirty children registered from the townships in Riversdale and Melkhoutfontein take part in the programme’s training sessions.
It all starts with some fitness activities and then they move on to technical coaching. To round off, the players compete against each other in matches before all having a post-training meal together.
The coaches utilise the two squash courts and the netball court at Still Bay for their sessions. This way, the young players, who rotate between three groups, maximise their time on court to focus on shot development and movement on court.
The PSA Foundation recently provided the Still Bay Squash Centre with Rebound donations of equipment and clothing, including rackets, balls and shoes. As ReBound continues to grow, more and more communities are benefitting from the distribution of recycled squash equipment and clothing.
Cody, one of Still Bay’s brightest talents as U14 national champion, told us about his exciting new gear, “I am thankful to receive my racket, I have always dreamed of owning a Tecnifibre, now I will play even better.”
Lohan meanwhile, told us proudly, “Ï can nearly beat my dad with my new racket.”
At the same time, the parents of Still Bay’s young players have recognised the impact of the program with one telling the coaches ‘please keep up the program, Zac loves the game so much”.
Antonio’s dad said “My son loves squash so much I am playing again”.
The PSA Foundation is always looking to support new communities that utilise squash as a vehicle for positive action. If you want to learn more about our other partner organisations visit our website here: https://psafoundation.com/squash-for-development/.
